St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis City Health Department might close two of its clinics.
The city-run clinics provide vaccinations for kids and test people and treat people for sexually transmitted diseases.
The closings are part of an effort to trim the health department's $10 million budget during a fiscal crunch.
The city's Health Board approved the plan to shut the clinics yesterday (Wednesday).
The closures would save nearly $1.2 million. In return, health officials agree that more money has to be spent to educate the public on where to go for STD treatment and immunizations, including community health centers.
The department's budget has been trimmed by $1.5 million for next year.
A final decision on the proposed cuts is about two months away. Approval must come from the city's aldermanic board and its chief fiscal board.
