Wildwood, MO – A former scout for the Baltimore Orioles who became known as "Superscout" died this weekend at his home in Wildwood, Mo. Jim Russo started with the O's when they were the St. Louis Browns.
His list of signees included pitchers Jim Palmer and Dave McNally and first baseman Boog Powell.
He also became known for the reports he gave the O's on other teams. Russo's reports on the Dodgers were cited as a factor in Baltimore's four-game sweep of the 1966 World Series. He wrote about his life in the book "Superscout."
Russo spent 33 years with the Orioles. He moved with the Saint Louis Browns to Baltimore in 1954, serving as an amateur, major league and advance scout, and also a special assistant.
Russo was 81.
