Springfield, ILL – Illinois' education superintendent says the governor's plan to overhaul the State Board of Education is just his way of getting back at school officials.
Superintendent Robert Schiller told the Chicago Tribune's editorial board that Governor Rod Blagojevich's plan is all about power and putting the governor's supporters in positions.
The governor has proposed eliminating the State Board of Education and putting its functions into a department under his control. Blagojevich says such a move would bring greater accountability to the system and improve education for children.
But Schiller says the governor's plan is retribution against school officials who lobbied for increased funding despite a tight budget and refused to hire job-seekers Blagojevich backed.
A spokeswoman for the governor says that's just not true.
