Authorities Investigate Strange Bridge Finding

By Associated Press

St. Louis, MO – Police and firefighters in St. Louis today are using sonar to check the Mississippi River after a brief scare on a busy bridge yesterday. The tests were ordered after Coast Guard officials discovered a dangling wire from the Poplar Street Bridge's guardrail yesterday afternoon.

The wire dangled to the water below where it floated beneath a barge. No explosives were found, and police say the wire might have been in the water for some time. Both the bridge and a two-mile stretch of river near it were closed temporarily, but reopened around 8 p-m.

Bridges and the river are often mentioned as possible terrorism targets. So is the Gateway Arch, which sits nearby. The Poplar Street Bridge carries Interstates 44, 64 and 70.
