Springfield, Ill. – Illinois' former U.S. Senator Paul Simon is recovering from heart surgery in a Springfield, Ill. hospital.

The 75-year-old former presidential candidate had a single bypass and heart valve surgery on Monday. That comes four years after having bypass surgery to correct six blocked arteries in his heart.

The surgery was performed at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Simon now lives in Makanda and heads the Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale.
