Jefferson City, Mo. – Republican lawmakers in the Missouri House have begun a petition drive to urge Democratic Governor Bob Holden to reverse some state funding cuts to public schools.
The move is the latest tactic in a year-long battle between Holden and House Republicans.
Monday, two lawmakers cited an increase in state revenues, and urged Holden to release nearly $200 million he withheld in education funding.
But State Budget Director Linda Luebbering said good figures for one month don't necessarily paint a picture of what's to come.
"Starting in January, February, March, when our collections fall and refunds rise, it would be much more difficult to try to make this statement," Luebbering said.
Holden contends the Republican-led Legislature's $19.1 billion budget is underfunded, forcing him to cut money from schools.
