St. Louis Man State's First West Nile Death This Year

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, Mo. – A St. Louis man is believed to be the first
human to die of West Nile virus in Missouri this year.

The city health department says today that a man in his 90s who had the virus has died. The department says the "highly
probable" case is pending confirmation by the Centers for Disease Control.

The city says a woman in her 20s is recovering from the virus and is expected to be released from a St. Louis hospital.

Meanwhile, St. Louis County officials say a 53-year-old man is recovering at home from what is suspected to be West Nile.

Only one case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Missouri this year - involving a 6-year-old girl in Putnam County. She is recovering.

Last year, 168 West Nile cases in humans were reported in Missouri. Seven people died.
