St. Louis, MO – St. Louis' new maximum security jail is now receiving prisoners. This week, corrections officials transferred 32 inmates convicted in the city but incarcerated in the St. Louis County jail. St. Louis' minimum security facility, the Workhouse, isn't large enough to house the city's daily inmate population, so the city leases prisoner beds from the county. St. Louis public safety director Sam Simon says though the new 101-million dollar facility is operational, the city will still maintain the Workhouse.
The city will transfer more than 200 prisoners from the county to the new city jail and the Workhouse by the end of December.
