Backers of Amendment 1 on next Tuesday’s ballot, unofficially called the “Right to Farm,’’ poured almost $400,000 into the campaign’s coffers on Wednesday to counter TV ads run by the opposition.
Missouri Republican Party chairman Ed Martin and state Auditor Tom Schweich are also holding a pro-Amendment event Thursday morning in downtown Kirkwood.
The new donations include $200,000 from the national Protect the Harvest PAC, a pro-Amendment 1 group based in Iowa, and $100,000 from the Missouri Pork Association. The Missouri Farm Bureau also contributed $20,000, with $18,000 coming from the Missouri Corn Growers Association.
Missouri Farmers Care, the chief group campaigning for Amendment 1, has been running TV ads and sending mailers to targeted groups of Missouri voters deemed most likely to turn out to the polls next Tuesday.
The opposition, which has less money, has been running ads this week in the St. Louis and Kansas City area.
