St. Louis – A judge in Missouri has overturned the conviction of another man prosecuted by former Republican Congressman Kenny Hulshof.
DeKalb County senior Judge Warren McElwain agreed on Wednesday that Hulshof had withheld evidence and presented false testimony at the trial of Dale Helmig, who was eventually sentenced to life in prison for the 1993 murder of his mother. Hulshof was a special state prosecutor at the time.
Hulshof said in a statement that he did his job ethically and in the spirit of the law.
In 2009, another judge issued a very similar ruling in the case of Joshua Kezer, who was convicted in 1994 of murdering a college student named Angela Mischelle Lawless and spent 17 years in prison. And on Tuesday, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled that a man from Chillicothe, whom Hulshof also prosecuted, will be able to present new evidence at an appeals hearing.
