Mo. starts e-mail notification on lost assets

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – People concerned they may have lost track of an old bank account or insurance policy may now sign up to be notified by e-mail if their property is turned over to Missouri government.

Treasurer Clint Zweifel says Missouri is just the second state to offer an e-mail notification service through its unclaimed property division.

State law requires banks, insurance companies and other businesses to turn over assets to the treasurer's office that belonged to a customer with whom there has been no contact for at least five years. That includes cash from bank accounts, stocks, bonds or the contents of safe deposit boxes.

The state returns the property to people if they can be located.
