Snowfall closes schools, slows traffic in St. Louis

By Matt Sepic, St. Louis Public Radio

St. Louis – Plow crews were out in full force this morning to deal with the St. Louis area's first major snowfall of the season. About between two-and-a-half and four inches of snow fell in the St. Louis area Wednesday night and early Thursday.

Police and transportation officials advised motorists to stay home. Most schools were closed, and even Missouri state lawmakers in Jefferson City took a snow day.

National Weather Service meteorologist Fred Glass said while the snow has tapered off, a winter weather advisory remains in effect.

"One of the big impact players now will be the wind," Glass said. "It's going to take that snow that's fallen and blow it around."

MODOT crews have applied a mixture of salt and beet juice to the roads as they cleared snow. The juice makes the salt more effective when temperatures are below freezing.
