St. Louis – Coal has a reputation as a sooty, dirty fuel. More recently, both environmentalists and the coal industry have become just as concerned about the carbon dioxide released when coal is burned.
Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and a major contributor to global warming. The federal government and coal companies here in St. Louis are funding research that aims to cut carbon dioxide pollution from power plants.
But environmentalists say the technology behind carbon capture and storage is far from proven. As part of the Environment Report's series on the future of coal, KWMU's Matt Sepic has this look at the science behind the slogans.
