Heavy rains cause rivers to rise in St. Louis area

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis – Heavy rains are causing some St. Louis area rivers to rise, and that has led to flooding and road closures in some areas.

In Alton, the Mississippi is expected to crest a few inches below flood stage some time Wednesday.

The Cuivre River at Troy, Mo. northwest of St. Louis, went above flood stage Sunday night, dropped, then rose again.

National Weather Service meteorologist Ben Miller said a cold front pushing down from the north will bring more rain through the day Tuesday.

"Until that pushes through the area, we're going to have a continued chance of showers and thunderstorms," Miller said. "With the slow movement of the front it's certainly not out of the question that some areas will get a significant amount more."

Miller said the majority of the rain has fallen north of I-70.

He said flooding is not expected in the Meramec River basin.
