Jefferson City, MO – Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder is calling for lawmakers to provide more aid and benefits to military veterans.
Kinder, who became a candidate for governor recently, is proposing scholarship programs for children of Missouri National Guard members who are either killed or disabled in the line of duty.
He also wants income tax exemptions for veterans to be fully implemented this year, instead of being phased in over six years time.
"So many men and women have given so much to this great country so we can enjoy our freedoms...we must honor their service, and in some case(s) their memories, with action, not just words," Kinder said.
The proposals could cost the state around $30 million a year.
However, Kinder seems to be leaning against a proposed ballot question that would raise the state sales tax to fund veterans issues.
"I'm still taking a look at it, seeing how it goes through the legislature...I think if we have sufficient commitment, sufficient will to do this, that we can do this without the tax increase...we'll have to see how it fares in the legislature this year, but I am not endorsing it today," Kinder said.
Other proposals include more funding for treatment and awareness of brain injuries and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and barring landlords from charging early departure fees for tenants called to active duty.
