Sesser, Ill. – A Greyhound bus struck and killed a firefighter on I-57 in southern Illinois.
Illinois State Police say the firefighter was from Sesser and was responding to an earlier tractor-trailer fire early this (Fri.) morning just north of Benton.
Police say the fire had been put out but emergency vehicles were still on the scene when the bus hit the firefighter at about 4:20 a.m.
The firefighter's name has not been released and won't be until the family is notified. Greyhound says it will fully cooperate with an investigation.
Trooper David Sneed says the bus driver will face several citations. Sneed adds some bus passengers reported the driver appeared sleepy before the crash.
Greyhound spokeswoman Anna Folmnsbee says the bus was headed to Chicago from Memphis and was carrying 51 passengers and the driver.
No one on the bus was hurt.
