East St. Louis, IL – The secretary to former East St. Louis Police Chief Ron Matthews was sentenced to two years' probation for obstruction of justice.

Ja'nerra Carson-Slaughter, 30, pleaded guilty last year to helping former East St. Louis police officer Ayoub Qattoum get a gun that had been seized, then lying about the incident. The weapon had been seized because the Qattoum was a convicted felon.

Prosecutors say Carson-Slaughter took $1,500 from Qattoum to help him get the pistol.

Qattoum also pleaded guilty to the charges last year. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

Both Carson-Slaughter and Qattoum agreed to testify against Chief Matthews.

Matthews has been found guilty on charges stemming from the incident and was sentenced to 33 months in prison.
