No raises likely for St. Louis County election judges this year

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – Poll workers in St. Louis County will probably have to wait another year for raises.

Both the board of elections and county leaders want to increase pay for election judges from $85 to $100.

But Election Director Joe Goeke says the money for raises will not be available this year.

"The county executive, the county council, the board all recognize that what we pay our poll workers for 15 hour days is not adequate," Goeke said. "All of us are committed to doing what we can to increase that."

Goeke says the tight budget situation is partly a result of the conversion to electronic voting. That's because the county had to expand its warehouse space for the new machines.

He says the money will probably be available next year. Poll workers last got a raise in 1999.
