Chicago, Ill. – Belleville's Memorial Hospital is one of four in the state that says they'll need cash to comply with an effort to close down medical waste incinerators.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been pushing for the 11 hospitals in Illinois that still burn medical waste to stop doing so.
But the hospital lobby has sent a key lawmaker a memo saying four of the facilities - including Belleville - want to keep burning trash until 2017.
And the Chicago Tribune reports Monday that the hospitals want $5 million from the state to change their disposal methods.
The other three hospitals are Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, St. John's Hospital in Springfield, and Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mount Vernon.
