SLPS Announce Four Superintendent Candidates

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Three of the four have experience as urban superintendents.

They are Dr. Paula Dawning, superintendent of the Benton Harbor, Michigan area schools; Dr. John Thompson, former superintendent of the Pittsburgh Public Schools; Dr. Deborah Jewell-Sherman, superintendent of the Richmond, Virginia public schools and Dr. Creg E. Williams, deputy chief academic officer, Philadelphia Public Schools.

The candidates will meet with district officials today and tomorrow.

They'll also participate in a public forum at Carr Lane Middle School at 5:15 today (Thursday).

Board member Ron Jackson says the district did not release the names sooner because of confidentiality concerns.

"Candidates for superintendent don't always want their current employer to know that they are looking for another job," Jackson said.

A final decision could come as soon as tomorrow (Friday).

Three different interim superintendents have run the district since 2003.
