Some Police Give Tickets for Unattended Vehicles

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – Police in some St. Louis area municipalities say leaving your vehicle unattended while you warm it up is a no-no. And they're handing out tickets to make the view clear.

St. Louis and some of its suburbs, including Florissant and Jennings, have such ordinances on the books, making such warm-ups illegal.

Jennings police say the ordinance is more like a public service, meant to curb auto thefts. Rashonda Kelly isn't buying it. Recently, she saw a Jennings officer in front of her house but didn't think much of it - until she saw him put a ticket on her car idling in the driveway.

When she confronted the officer, she says he told her she couldn't leave her idling car unattended.

The penalty for such tickets can be up to $500 and 30 days in jail.
