Springfield, Ill. – Illinois lawmakers head back to Springfield again today (Friday), but they're hoping their extended spring session will soon be over.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich and legislative leaders reached a tentative agreement on the state budget Tuesday. Lawmakers hope to approve a budget and finish other work this weekend after spending weeks in overtime session.
Some issues, including Illinois' medical malpractice law, remain unresolved and could hold up the process.
The budget proposal would cut spending by 4% at most state agencies. It includes $389 million in new spending for elementary and secondary education.
