St. Louis, MO – St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and the City's Election Board want a few polling places open a week before the November election to let people vote early.
They tell the Post-Dispatch that state law now requires it for all presidential elections.
But the state's top election official, Secretary of State Matt Blunt, disagrees. His spokesman Spence Jackson says there's currently no provision to allow early voting, though he adds Blunt wishes there were one.
The mayor's office says it's possible the matter could end up in court. If St. Louis prevails, early voting could be allowed statewide for about a week.
The dispute could also be of national significance. Missouri is a battleground state in this fall's presidential elections.
