Sauget, ILL. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is accusing a Metro-East company of violating the Clean Air Act.
The Big River Zinc Corporation in Sauget makes zinc metal; it was cited for not telling the agency plans to build two zinc roasters. The EPA also says Big River didn't comply with emissions limits. Another citation accused the company of failing to conduct timely performance tests and did not notify the agency of the test results.
Big River produces about 100,000 metric tons of zinc metal each year. Company President George Obeldobel says Big River has always cooperated with the EPA and has always been in compliance.
The company is located at 2401 Mississippi Ave. in Sauget, about ten miles north of Belleville.
