This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Aug. 10, 2012 - An intruder bolted from the Campbell House Museum Monday night with just under $100 in-hand -- but the actual loss is not what the intruder took with him; it's the damage caused when breaking into the building, as the private foundation points out on its blog.
According to the blog, after hopping over the wrought iron fence and prying open the exterior wooden doors, the intruder threw a football-sized piece of concrete through the interior door glass.
A 5-feet by 18-inch-wide etched, frosted glass window dating from around 1880, to be exact.
The foundation notes on its blog that replicating the window to match its twin, which is intact on the other half of the double doors, will be costly.
Because the Campbell House does not receive any local, state or federal support, and operates on a small budget, the foundation is asking for donations to reconstruct the replica.
