The dispute between St. Louis-based Patriot Coal and the United Mine Workers of America appears to be over.
The union announced today that it had reached an agreement to reduce some of the cuts in pension and health care benefits approved by a federal bankruptcy judge on May 29.
"After several weeks of nearly around-the-clock negotiations, I believe we have reached something that can be taken to the membership for ratification," UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts said in a statement. He would not release details of the settlement until after the ratification vote, which is scheduled for Friday.
A union spokesman says the settlement does not alter plans for a previously scheduled rally in downtown St. Louis on Tuesday.
