The Metro East suburb, long plagued by an aging and damaged sewer system backing up and flooding into homes and streets, requires more state and federal funding to continue repairs of its sewer and water systems.

The 80-year-old Democrat and East St. Louis native told WBEZ in an Illinois exclusive that age was a factor in his not seeking a sixth term in Congress.

An East St. Louis pantry said it used to get 12 to 13 pallets of produce per week. Now, it’s four or five after the USDA eliminated a program that reimburses states for purchasing produce from local farmers.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker called the state a ‘beacon for national success’ when it comes to the 2024 elections.

The cash will funnel through the Army Corps of Engineers to the city. In all, the project to help repair the city’s main trunk line will cost $4.67 million.
