Gordon Moore Park

A pump to drain the massive sinkhole that formed after a limestone mine collapsed in June 2024 has been running since Monday.

Last month, Alton’s attorney asked the mine company to pay for the massive hole in Gordon Moore Park to be drained. The process is still being worked out.

While the majority of the Gordon F. Moore Community Park and the Spencer T. Olin Golf Course will open later this week, the soccer field where a mine collapsed below and an adjacent ball field will remain closed.

The timeline to determine the exact cause of the sinkhole last month — and the necessary repairs — are still being fleshed out.
