Jefferson City, Mo. – Some Republican lawmakers want Gov. Jay Nixon to submit a new budget proposal because Missouri's revenues are falling at nearly twice the expected rate.
Nixon met yesterday with groups of House and Senate members to discuss the revenue problems. He said more cuts and structural changes must be made in state government.
Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Rob Mayer said Republicans asked Nixon to provide new recommendations for cuts.
When Nixon outlined a budget in January, the state was expecting a 6.4 percent revenue decline this year, and 3.6 percent growth next year.
But revenues were down 12.7 percent through February. And that means next year's forecast also will have to be revised.
