Environmentalists raise concerns about truck-only interstate lanes

By AP/KWMU

Kansas City, Mo. – Environmentalists are raising safety questions about the state's plan to add truck-only lanes to Interstate 70.

MODOT wants to trucks travel on two sets of interior lanes separated from general traffic by a grass median.

The Sierra Club says while separating car and truck traffic is a good idea, the state may be overselling the safety benefits

The group says trucks still have to cross the primary lanes to exit the interstate, and cars would be in the trucks' blind spots.

MODOT says the proposal is safe. The agency is awaiting federal approval.
