Kirkwood, MO – Funeral services began Monday for the five victims of the Kirkwood City Hall shooting spree.

An overflow crowd of about 1,200 people attended the funeral service of Public Works Director Ken Yost at First Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood.

Family friend Toby Burge read a eulogy written by Yost's son David.

"There is not a square foot of street in Kirkwood that my father has not walked and not a square foot in Kirkwood that does not show his handiwork. "He set an example of public service and fatherly love that I can strive to emulate but never hope to equal."

Yost, 61, had been the Kirkwood city engineer and public works director since 1973.

Reverend David Holyan remembered him as a willing public servant, and a loving father and husband.

"Ken worked to hold the beauty of this community together," said Holyan. "He was part of the very fabric of Kirkwood, along with those selfless servants who held this community together."

Kirkwood Mayor Mike Swoboda remains in critical condition but has opened his eyes and is interacting with family. Swoboda was shot twice in the head.

A funeral for Charles Thornton is set for 1 p.m. Thursday at Kirkwood United Methodist Church.
