Marion, Ill. – An Illinois prison inmate charged in a decades-old multistate killing spree will not face the death penalty in one of the alleged murders.
Prosecutors in Williamson County, Ill. say they do not plan to seek the execution of Timothy Krajcir for the 1978 rape and murder of Virginia Lee Witte of Marion.
Authorities say they took the death penalty off the table because Krajcir helped solve the slaying.
Krajcir is accused of or has pleaded guilty to a total of nine murders in Illinois, Pennsylvania and Missouri.
Krajcir has been imprisoned in Illinois since the early 1980s for a variety of sex crimes.
