Gundaker Commercial Group receives tax breaks for O'Fallon Lakes Apartments

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Housing Development Commission on Friday approved awarding the Gundaker Commercial Group $865,000 worth of tax credits.

They'll help offset the cost of a recently-completed housing project in O'Fallon, Missouri.

Two subcontractors that helped build the project had been cited for hiring illegal immigrants.

But Gundaker President Michael Hejna told commissioners that the two companies are no longer affiliated with the project.

"The two bad boys, (the first of) which is PRS, is bankrupt and out of business, and the second bad boy, which is NRP, is no longer in business, lost a lot of money, and is not able to do business in the state of Missouri," Hejna said.

A spokesman for the Attorney General's office, however, said that Gundaker does not deserve additional tax breaks, because of the use of undocumented workers at the site.

Construction on O'Fallon Lakes Apartments is finished. The tax credits will be used to offset building costs.
