Judge gives transitional board financial reins

By Marshall Griffin, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – Cole County Judge Richard Callahan has ruled that the state-appointed transitional board has the authority to write checks on behalf of St. Louis city schools.

St. Louis Schools Spokeswoman Deborah Sistrunk says the decision clears the way for teachers and other workers to get paid.

"And it also means for our teachers, for our students, for our staff who are preparing for the beginning of the school year, that everything is going ahead smoothly and effectively," Sistrunk said.

Judge Callahan's ruling included a temporary restraining order against the elected school board, which had challenged the transitional board's authority to make financial decisions for the district.

A full court case on the governance of the St. Louis school district could come in September, but an official date hasn't been set.
