St. Louis – A state audit has detailed hundreds of thousands of dollars in suspicious spending at the Riverview Gardens School District.
Missouri auditor Susan Montee released the findings of the probe Thursday.
Among the red flags were $158,000 in overpayments to district superintendent Henry Williams, $240,000 in unreported credit card purchases and a two years worth of travel expenditures totaling $865,000.
Montee says the district's budget trouble cannot be blamed on any one particular item, but a near complete lack of spending oversight over a period of years.
"What we found was just widespread problems, overall lack of management and oversight, which allowed just large sums of money to be spent in whole bunch of different ways."
Immediately following the release of the audit, the Riverview school board voted to suspend Superintendent Williams while they prepare a case to fire him.
A hearing for Williams is set for April 18.
