Ameren to limit power plant emissions in Illinois

By Sean Crawford, Illinois Public Radio

Springfield, Ill. – Ameren Corporation says it will cut pollution from its power generating stations in Illinois.

Under a deal with the state's environmental protection agency the utility will install equipment to reduce emissions of mercury, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur dioxide over the next several years. All have been linked to health problems.

While the changes could mean cleaner air... customers will likely wind up paying more... according to Ameren's Leigh Morris.

"Certainly when we spend money there is an impact on the customer and there will be a small impact on electric bills at a future date," Morris said.

He says the deal will enable St. Louis based Ameren to continue operations at its power plants.

Ameren is the second largest in Illinois.
