Guard cable installed on I-70

By KBIA

St. Louis, MO – The Missouri Department of Transportation has installed nearly 180 miles of guard cable along Interstate 70 between Kansas City and St. Louis.

The steel cable, placed in the median of the highway, is intended to prevent vehicles from crossing into the opposite lane. MoDOT says the guard cables have already resulted in fewer crossover crashes.

MoDot Director Pete Rahn says the cables cost more than $6 million and despite the high cost, he says it's a necessity.

"We are talking people's lives and that's a horrible situation for us to be in to talk having to trade how many lives for the lack of funds to improve our highways," said Rahn.

MoDOT's next plan is to construct similar guard cables on Interstate 44.
