Newest city alderman works to undo some of predecessor's work

By Tom Weber, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – St. Louis's newest alderman is working to undo some of the actions of his predecessor.

Bill Waterhouse became 24th Ward alderman two months ago after voters recalled Tom Bauer.

One complaint of those wanting Bauer out was that he had removed the entire ward from a preservation district.

That means developers can knock down buildings without needing a preservation board's approval.

Waterhouse told an aldermanic committee this week of his promise to voters to put the 24th back into the district.

"I'm not against them tearing a building down; I just don't want them to tear down a building that some people would consider valuable or a building that should be saved," Waterhouse said.

His bill to put the 24th ward back in a preservation district goes before the full Board of Alderman Friday.
