Weather Service checking to see if tornadoes hit SE Missouri

By AP/KWMU

Charleston, Mo. – The National Weather Service said Wednesday morning that it cannot confirm yet whether any tornadoes touched down in southeast Missouri during storms on Tuesday.

There have been no reports of fatalities, but the agency planned to send four teams out to look for possible damage.

Pat Spoden, a science and operations officer, says it is unclear how many tornadoes might have been spotted, after two or three rounds of storms in the affected areas.

Residents and officials reported seeing at least two tornadoes yesterday in southeast Missouri, one in East Prairie and another in New Madrid. There were also reports of tornado-like rotations near the town of Wyatt in Mississippi County.
