Hurricane evacuees arrive in Alton

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – Nearly 175 hurricane evacuees are receiving medical care and shelter in Alton.

The group arrived late Wednesday night at Mid-America Airport and are now at Alton Mental Health Center.

Most are not physically injured, though 13 required hospitalization. Officials say for the most part, the group is in good spirits.

But others like Tiffany Bonney are traumatized. She and her three small children waited nearly two weeks to be rescued from their home outside New Orleans. Now, she's trying to reunite with other displaced family members.

"It was scary in a way, because all my family is in Texas and we're trying to get
there, but we don't have no way to get there, Bonney said. And it was scary coming here, because we don't know anything about where we're at now."

Social workers are helping victims contact loved ones and file for government benefits.
