St. Louis, MO – No one was hurt Thursday when a section of the closed McKinley Bridge collapsed.

Fire officials say a private company working for the Illinois Department of Transportation was doing demolition work. They think that work - combined with the bridge's age - led to the collapse.

A piece of heavy construction equipment and part of the bridge fell onto a nearby storage building, but no one was inside at the time.

The McKinley Bridge has been closed since 2001 because of safety concerns; there are plans, though, to fix and reopen it. The bridge runs over the Mississippi River between St. Louis and Venice, Ill.
