Jefferson City, MO – Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt took issue Thursday with comments by the state's transportation director, Pete Rahn, about opponents of Missouri's motorcycle helmet law.

Rahn was quoted in the Post-Dispatch as saying motorcyclists who pushed to get rid of the helmet law seemed as though "they hadn't bathed in two weeks." The bill failed in the legislative session that recently ended.

Blunt issued a statement today saying the Transportation Department should focus on fixing Missouri's roads, not picking fights with interest groups.

Rahn also put out a statement today, apologizing for what he called an inappropriate comment.

The directors of most other state agencies serve at the will of the governor. Rahn, however, works for the state highways commission.
