Venice, Ill. – The new Lincoln Charter School in Venice Illinois opened Monday with three teachers overseeing 32 students.
Lincoln Charter was created after when the local board disbanded Venice High School earlier this year, and after Gov. Rod Blagojevich voiced his support for such a school, in part, by appointing a new state superintendent.
Most Venice students transferred to East St. Louis, and more than half went to the Madison and Brooklyn school districts.
But 32 waited for the new charter school. The ranks include three seniors, six juniors, 14 sophomores and nine freshmen.
