Alton, IL – Authorities say hundreds of gallons of fuel spilled after a remotely operated train partially slipped off the tracks in Alton.
Environmental cleanup crews from state and local agencies worked yesterday to clean up the liquid and to stem a leak from the fuel tank of the Norfolk Southern train.
Officials say the 3,200 gallon tank punctured when it scraped against the rails as the train left the tracks.
The train was a General Motors Electro-Motive Division train, which operates without a conductor. No one was injured.
Norfolk Southern spokesman Rudy Husband says the cause of the incident is under investigation.
