St. Louis – Democrat Claire McCaskill says her primary election challenge of Governor Bob Holden will not hurt the party's chances of winning the seat in November.

No Missouri governor has ever been defeated by a member of his own party in a primary election.

Some say McCaskill's campaign is splitting the state's Democrats and will help Republican Matt Blunt win the office. She disagrees.

"I think it's going to strengthen our party, this process," McCaskill said. "And I disagree with that notion. I know people have it but I think it's fundamentally wrong and I hope I'm proven right in November. But I wouldn't be doing it. If we had the House or the Senate, I wouldn't have run."

McCaskill was a guest on KWMU's St. Louis on the Air Wednesday.
