Heat Overcomes Waiting Bush Supporters in St. Charles

By AP/KWMU

St. Charles – At least four people were hospitalized and several others have been treated at the scene after being overcome by heat and high humidity while awaiting President Bush's visit to St. Charles.

Lines formed outside the Family Arena hours before the president's 5:30 p.m. speech.

Hundreds of supporters stood in a line snaking along shadeless pavement, with mid-afternoon temperatures reaching into the 90s and extreme humidity.

The conditions of those hospitalized are not immediately known, but St. Charles Fire Captain Rick Daly says all are being treated for heat exhaustion.

The president's visit comes a day after Vice President Dick Cheney's visit to Columbia.

Missouri is considered a swing state up for grabs in the November election.
