Union, Mo. – Four of 15 horses rescued from a central Missouri farm in April are now mothers.
The Humane Society of Missouri removed the emaciated horses from a farm near Rolla and took them to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, the Humane Society's facility in Union. At the time, four of the animals were pregnant.
Officials say all four foals and their mothers are doing well.
The organization was awarded custody of the horses last month and is seeking donations of goods and cash to help care for them.
The Humane Society is also sponsoring a contest to name the animals. Details are on the society's Web site at www.hsmo.org.
Some of the horses may be available for adoption as early as August 1. The mares and foals can only be adopted together.
