Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri House Wednesday defeated a bill that would change the name of Southwest Missouri State University.
The voted was 81-to-70 against calling the Springfield school Missouri State University.
House members debated the bill late into last night, giving it first-round approval on a voice vote.
Speaker Catherine Hanaway, who supports of the bill, says she has no plans to reconsider it this session.
In the Senate, a similar measure underwent a 24-hour filibuster spread over five days before receiving initial passage last week.
Opponents relented in the Senate only after the lead sponsor, Senate President Pro Tem Peter Kinder, R-Cape Girardeau, agreed to delay a final vote until both chambers pass a bond plan backed by the University of Missouri.
