Carbondale, IL – Durbin says it's too early to tell if the resistance will cease.
The Democrat spoke to reporters in Carbondale, Illinois on Sunday before a memorial service for former senator Paul Simon.
Durbin said the world will be watching how the U.S. treats Saddam, and it's important that he be brought before a credible Iraqi war tribunal that doesn't appear to be stacked against him:
"The world will watch how we deal with Saddam Hussein; whether our respect for law would just be words, or really be demonstrated in the way that he is treated," Durbin said.
"Whether he is brought for a fair trial before a tribunal; held accountable...those are things, I think, that will measure our leadership in the world."
Durbin says it's too soon to tell whether the capture will help President Bush politically.
