St. Louis, MO – St. Louis area Catholics have a new archbishop. This morning, the Vatican named Raymond Burke to be the new archbishop of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. He's a native of La Crosse, Wis., which is where he's also been bishop for the past nine years.
A formal announcement is scheduled for later this morning. Burke will replace Cardinal Justin Rigali, who left St. Louis this summer to become the Archbishop of Philadelphia.
Burke will be formally installed in St. Louis in January. No specific date has been set.
Burke was ordained a priest in 1975 by Pope Paul VI. Pope John Paul II ordained him a bishop in 1995.
